People Power Party pressures Lee Jae-myung with special prosecutor card
Lee counterattacks with development profit recovery system
[Asia Economy reporters Jeon Jinyoung and Park Juni] On the 29th, the leadership of the People Power Party visited the controversial Daejang-dong site and pressured Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung. Meanwhile, the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea demanded a public apology from the People Power Party, and Governor Lee attempted to shift the situation by bringing up the real estate development profit recovery system.
Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, visited the Pangyo Daejang-dong site as his first schedule after returning from the United States on the same day to hear the voices of residents. Kim Do-eup, chairman of the Policy Committee, also visited the National Investigation Headquarters in the morning to demand a strong investigation from the police. In a phone interview with this paper, Chairman Kim said, "It is a suspicious situation where the case might be being covered up while watching the powers that be."
The People Power Party, which is also facing counterattacks over this issue, is employing a strategy to pressure the Democratic Party and Governor Lee with stronger offensive cards such as the introduction of a special prosecutor rather than focusing on defense. Yoon Seok-youl, the party’s presidential candidate and former Prosecutor General, said on the day, "Lee’s refusal of a special prosecutor is an admission of involvement in the crime and self-contradiction," and Hong Joon-pyo, a People Power Party lawmaker, also raised his voice, saying, "It cannot be revealed without a special prosecutor."
The Democratic Party is also tightening its offensive reins, leading to a ‘strong against strong’ situation. Song Young-gil, the party leader, said, "Attacking candidate Lee Jae-myung is shameless," and raised his voice demanding a "public apology." Governor Lee, who is at the center of the controversy, launched a counterattack by bringing up the ‘real estate development profit recovery system’ on the same day. It appears to be an attempt to shift the situation by turning the Daejang-dong controversy into a legislative issue.
