[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The number of daily COVID-19 deaths in the United States has been analyzed to be higher than the combined death toll of other high-income countries.
The British weekly magazine The Economist reported on the 27th (local time) that "according to an analysis applying the excess deaths model, it is estimated that 2,800 people die from COVID-19 daily in the United States." This is nearly three times the combined daily death toll (1,000 people) of other countries classified as high-income by the World Bank.
Looking at COVID-19 deaths per capita by country, the United States has about eight times more deaths than other wealthy countries. According to Johns Hopkins University, the average daily COVID-19 deaths in the United States over the past week were close to 2,000.
The Economist's estimate is significantly higher than the statistics from Johns Hopkins University. The Economist evaluated that "currently, the United States is an outlier among wealthy countries in the pandemic (global infectious disease outbreak)."
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has seen daily excess deaths decrease by more than 90% compared to the peak in November last year, and the United Kingdom has seen a 95% reduction compared to January this year. The Economist stated, "The EU and the UK have seen a significant reduction in COVID-19 deaths due to increased vaccination rates."
