Decline in Vegetables Including Hobak Due to Slowed Consumption After Chuseok

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Prices of vegetables such as cucumber and zucchini are showing a downward trend due to reduced consumption after the holiday.

The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation Gwangju Jeonnam Regional Headquarters announced on the 28th that it published the agricultural product newsletter 'EolmayO (No. 2118)'.

According to this data, as of the 27th, the retail price of one zucchini (Yangdong Market) was 1,500 won, and cucumbers were 8,000 won for 10 pieces, decreasing by 40% and 20% respectively compared to two weeks ago.

Green lettuce was 1,200 won per 100g, down 47%; radish was 2,000 won each, down 9.09%; and napa cabbage was 6,500 won per head, down 7.14%.

On the other hand, green onions recorded 2,500 won per 1kg, up 13.64%, due to decreased shipment volume caused by poor growth from prolonged heatwaves.

It was analyzed that most fruits had no demand increase factors as products purchased during the Chuseok holiday remain.

Among them, pears (Shingo) are expected to have a 39.4% increase in shipment volume compared to the previous year due to favorable crop conditions. Demand showed little fluctuation, but supply increased, resulting in a 5.71% decrease to 33,000 won for 10 pieces.

Conversely, apples (Hongro) were sold at 25,000 won for 10 pieces, up 25%, due to decreased supply as the shipment period ended.

Pork belly (100g) fell 1.26% to 2,350 won due to increased livestock numbers and weakened dining-out demand caused by COVID-19, and eggs (special grade, 30 pieces) decreased 6.11% to 6,760 won due to recovery in laying hen numbers and increased imports.

An aT official said about the outlook for the next two weeks, “Generally clear weather is forecast, so an increase in shipment volume due to improved growth is expected, but consumption contraction is anticipated as people prepare for various bills at the end of the month, so most vegetables are expected to decline.”
