[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A man in his 30s has been arrested by the police on suspicion of wielding a weapon and inflicting serious injuries on a couple in their 20s who were taking a late-night walk near a lake.
The Sokcho Police Station in Gangwon announced on the 27th that they have apprehended and are investigating a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of aggravated assault.
Mr. A is suspected of attacking a couple in their 20s with a weapon around 11:40 p.m. on the 26th while they were walking along the Yeongnangho Lake promenade in Sokcho City, Gangwon Province.
Both victims are reported to be out of life-threatening danger. However, the male victim sustained severe wounds to his neck and wrist, requiring suturing surgery, and the female victim also suffered an injury to her neck.
Based on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and other evidence, the police made an emergency arrest of Mr. A at his residence around 7:45 a.m.
Mr. A has admitted to the crime but remains silent about his motive, according to reports.
On the 27th, the victim posted on his social networking service (SNS) describing the incident. He said, "After work, I went to Yeongnangho Lake for a night walk with my girlfriend. As we passed the midpoint, someone walking from the opposite direction passed behind me and suddenly stabbed my neck with a knife." He added, "The attacker immediately slashed my girlfriend’s neck as well. Feeling the danger, I tried to resist and grab the assailant, but he slashed my wrist a second time and fled."
The victim continued, "It all happened so quickly that I didn’t feel pain and was in a panic when I got into the ambulance. Fortunately, the knife didn’t penetrate too deeply into my neck, so my life is not in danger, but I had to get stitches." He explained, "My wrist tendons and nerves were completely severed. Thankfully, my girlfriend narrowly escaped serious injury and received nine stitches. I hope others will not walk alone and stay cautious."
Meanwhile, it is known that Mr. A and the victims were complete strangers to each other.
