[Asia Economy Reporter Na Yeeun] It has been revealed that the decisive factor in a man in his 20s, who escaped while awaiting incarceration at a prison and later surrendered, was the persuasion of the escapee's father.

According to the police on the 27th, the escapee, Mr. A (25), fled at around 3:33 p.m. on the 25th while waiting for a COVID-19 test before incarceration at the main gate of Uijeongbu Prison, handcuffed.

Mr. A removed his right hand from the handcuffs in the Gosan Housing Development District area of Uijeongbu City and used a metal piece from a construction site container to break the handcuffs. He then discarded his cellphone near the prison, moved to Dongducheon City, and used an electric bicycle to come to Seoul.

The police mobilized about 150 personnel to conduct a search during Mr. A's escape period, and on the 26th, they obtained an arrest warrant and began searching and tracking. They also asked Mr. B, Mr. A's father, to persuade his son to surrender if he came to him.

Meanwhile, after the escape, Mr. A contacted his father, Mr. B, saying he was "cold and hungry," and the father and son reportedly met in Cheonho-dong, Seoul. Afterwards, Mr. B reportedly told the police, "Detective, I will feed my son a bowl of Seolleongtang and get him to surrender."

Mr. B bought a bowl of Seolleongtang for Mr. A to persuade him and took him to Hanam Police Station, where Mr. A surrendered at around 8:20 p.m. on the 26th.

Previously, Mr. A, who had been working as a delivery driver and day laborer, was indicted by the Uijeongbu District Court in November last year on theft charges, and after an arrest warrant was issued and he was detained, he escaped.

The police have applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A on charges of escape. The warrant hearing is scheduled for the 28th.
