[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] On the 27th, Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, visited the Cultural Heritage Administration at the Daejeon Government Complex, where Deputy Governor Choi Young-ho and Chairman of the County Council Kim Jong-du met with Kim Hyun-mo, the head of the Cultural Heritage Administration, to request the retention of the current designation name of Geochang Susungdae.

On this day, regarding the Cultural Heritage Administration's notice of changing the Susungdae name, the county directly conveyed to the head of the Cultural Heritage Administration the joint petition to maintain the Geochang Susungdae name adopted by representatives at the Geochang-gun institutions and organizations meeting held on the 24th, along with residents' opinions and media reports, expressing the position of Geochang-gun and its residents on the proposed name change.

Deputy Governor Choi Young-ho explained, “Susungdae has a clearly recorded origin and meaning, and it is a unique name that has settled over many years. Currently, it is used not only as the name of a cultural heritage site but also as a symbolic word representing Geochang in various places, deeply ingrained in the lives of the residents.”

Additionally, Kim Jong-du, Chairman of the Geochang County Council, requested the retention of the current name, stating, “If there were reasons such as clearing past history or conflicts among residents, a name change could be considered, but currently, most residents have the opinion that there is no reason to change the name.”

Geochang-gun opposed the Cultural Heritage Administration’s proceeding without prior consultation with the county and residents, distributing press releases, collecting residents' opinions, and holding meetings with local institutions and organizations, ultimately adopting a joint petition to maintain the current designation name of Geochang Susungdae.
