Lee Jae-myung Widens Gap with Lee Nak-yeon Again
Leads Jeonbuk Primary with 54.55%
Cumulative Vote Share 53.01%, Majority Achieved
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] In the Democratic Party presidential primary in Jeonbuk, Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung recorded 54.55% of the votes, ranking first. Governor Lee maintained a majority with a cumulative vote share of 53.01%, allowing him to continue his momentum.
On the 26th, at the Democratic Party Jeonbuk regional primary held at Woosuk University Gymnasium in Wanju-gun, Jeonbuk, Governor Lee received 22,276 votes, achieving 54.55% of the vote and placing first. Former Representative Lee secured 15,715 votes, recording 38.48%, trailing by a margin of 16.07 percentage points and placing second. Following were candidates Chu Mi-ae (5.21%), Park Yong-jin (1.25%), and Kim Doo-kwan (0.51%).
Governor Lee reclaimed first place in the Jeonbuk primary after having lost to former Representative Lee in Gwangju and Jeonnam. In the previous day’s Gwangju and Jeonnam voting, former Representative Lee won his first victory with 47.12% of the vote, surpassing Governor Lee’s 46.95%.
Looking at the cumulative vote share including the Jeonbuk primary results, Governor Lee secured a total of 341,858 votes, maintaining a majority with 53.01%. Former Representative Lee is behind with a cumulative vote share of 34.48% (222,353 votes), trailing Governor Lee by 18.53 percentage points.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Representative Kim Doo-kwan announced his withdrawal from the presidential primary race. He stated, “More important than my completion of the primary is the reestablishment of the administration a hundred or a thousand times over,” and declared his support for Governor Lee, saying, “Candidate Lee Jae-myung is a capable leader who will pioneer the future. Please give your support to Candidate Lee Jae-myung.”
