Takaichi of Japan: "Will Prevent Korea from Building More Structures on Dokdo" Outrageous Remark Former Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Takaichi Declares Candidacy for LDP Presidency [Image Source=Yonhap News]

[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] Sanae Takaichi, former Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications and a candidate in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election, which is effectively the selection of Japan's next prime minister, sparked controversy by stating that she would "prevent South Korea from building more structures" on Dokdo.

Today (26th), the Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Takaichi made this remark during an online meeting with the Hyogo Prefectural Assembly the previous day. Currently, the Japanese government has no means to prevent South Korea, which effectively controls Dokdo, from installing additional structures there.

Therefore, Takaichi's statement is interpreted as an attempt to rally support from right-wing factions ahead of the LDP leadership election scheduled for the 29th. Takaichi is considered a right-wing figure and is well known to be supported by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in this leadership race.

Takaichi has consistently visited Yasukuni Shrine, where Class A war criminals from the Pacific War are enshrined, annually on the Pacific War's end anniversary and during the spring and autumn festivals. She has also expressed her intention to continue these visits after assuming the prime ministership.

On the 24th, during an online policy debate for the LDP leadership election, when asked if she would visit Yasukuni Shrine after becoming prime minister, she replied, "I will visit." She reiterated the same intention during an appearance on the satellite broadcast BS Fuji program on the 3rd.
