"Criticism of 'Presidential Election Coverage Mirroring 30 Years Ago'... Professor Lee Jung-ki of Dongmyung University Publishes 'Presidential Election and Voters' Right to Know'"

Professor Lee Jung-ki of Dongmyeong University recently published a book.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Professor Lee Jeong-gi of the Department of Advertising and PR at Dongmyung University has published a book titled "The Presidential Election and Voters' Right to Know."

Released on September 24, this book is attracting attention as the primary elections for selecting candidates by political parties are underway ahead of the 20th presidential election.

It is gaining more attention for analyzing the problems of presidential election coverage from the perspective of voters' right to know and proposing improvement measures.

Professor Lee pointed out in the book, "Historical presidential election coverage by Korean media has not been free from excessive conflict-centered frames, partisan frames, and horse-race style reporting."

He notes that these chronic issues are being reproduced in the coverage of the primary elections for selecting the 20th presidential candidates.

Professor Lee states, "Problematic reports that disregard voters' right to know include media coverage defining the competition between Democratic Party candidates Lee Jae-myung and Lee Nak-yeon as the 'Myeong-Nak Battle,' 'take-it-or-leave-it' style suspicion reports about the Democratic Party's leading presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, and unnecessary suspicion reports about the family privacy of the People Power Party's leading presidential candidate Yoon Seok-youl."

He argues, "When Korean media's presidential election coverage proceeds with in-depth candidate reports and policy-centered coverage, voters' right to know can be fulfilled," adding, "Korean democracy can advance to the next level."

Planned as part of the pamphlet series by the media-specialized publisher Communication Books, this book consists of six chapters: ▲ Presidential Election Coverage and Voters' Right to Know, ▲ Problems of Presidential Election Coverage: An Academic Approach, ▲ Horse-Race Style Election Coverage and Violation of the Right to Know, ▲ Frames in Election Coverage and Damage to the Right to Know, ▲ Guidelines for Election Coverage to Expand Voters' Right to Know, and ▲ Directions and Tasks for Expanding Voters' Right to Know in Election Coverage.

This book is Professor Lee Jeong-gi's 20th work on the theme of freedom of expression, along with previous titles such as "The Reality of Freedom of Expression in the Republic of Korea" (2016), "The Reality of Freedom of Expression in the Republic of Korea 2" (2020), and "The Chilling Effect" (2021).
