[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do is undertaking a project to remove and maintain old, ownerless, and dangerous signboards to improve the urban landscape.

According to the county on the 24th, the maintenance targets include signboards that have been left abandoned due to long-term closure or suspension of business caused by COVID-19, protruding signboards with severe aging that pose a risk of falling due to natural disasters, and pole-mounted signboards left unattended by the roadside without owners.

Since 2018, the county has been promoting a removal project for ownerless signboards left unattended for a long time due to the absence of managers, as well as old signboards that have been left like eyesores in the city due to business closures, suspensions, or store relocations, and signboards at risk of falling due to natural disasters such as typhoons. Over the past three years, a total of 86 old and ownerless signboards have been removed, receiving favorable reviews from local residents.

Residents who wish to have their signboards removed can submit a consent and application form for signboard removal to the Construction and Urban Department of the county office.

The application deadline is until the 15th of next month, and eligible applicants include owners or managers of buildings where ownerless signboards are installed, representatives of closed businesses, and individuals who have discovered ownerless or old dangerous signboards. The removal is scheduled to take place in October.

Jangheung-gun Mayor Jeong Jong-sun stated, “Most ownerless and closed business signboards have been left unattended for a long time, posing many safety risks and detracting from the city’s appearance. Through this signboard maintenance, we expect to greatly contribute not only to improving the urban landscape but also to reducing safety accidents in preparation for disasters such as strong winds.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to create a safe and pleasant urban environment.”
