[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] The three major domestic mobile carriers are implementing special communication measures in preparation for increased call volumes during the Chuseok holiday period.
According to industry sources on the 19th, SK Telecom expects nationwide data traffic on Chuseok day to increase by 31% from usual, reaching a maximum of 886TB (terabytes). To prepare for this traffic surge, it has completed capacity expansions at over 9,000 base stations located on highways, national roads, tourist spots, and shopping malls. This is in response to the government’s plan to support free nationwide video calls during the Chuseok holiday, which is expected to cause a sharp rise in call volumes.
SK Telecom analyzes customer traffic usage based on artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, and has established a workforce of 1,637 employees per day until the 22nd to maintain call quality. Additionally, it has proactively expanded server capacity and completed pre-inspections in cooperation with subsidiaries such as T map Mobility and SK Broadband. The company is also collaborating with affiliates through its Integrated Security Control Center to prevent security breach incidents.
KT is also implementing focused monitoring and special measures to provide stable communication services during the holiday period. It is strengthening its 24-hour monitoring system and maintaining an emergency recovery system with an average of 1,490 employees working daily.
Moreover, KT has completed wireless quality pre-inspections at major highways and national roads, rest areas, airports, KTX·SRT stations, and terminals where returning and departing travelers are expected to gather. It has designated about 1,100 locations nationwide, including department stores and shopping malls expected to be crowded, as focused monitoring targets to manage communication quality.
LG Uplus has established a 'Holiday Special Communication Plan' including network optimization and 24-hour operation of a comprehensive situation room to prepare for the surge in mobile call volume and data traffic. During this period, it has entered an emergency operation system for special holiday network communication. A comprehensive situation room capable of emergency response to urgent situations has been opened at its Magok office in Seoul, initiating 24-hour focused monitoring.
LG Uplus has measured quality through pre-inspections of 5G and LTE base stations located on nationwide highways, rest areas, KTX·SRT stations, bus terminals, and airports where network traffic is expected to increase, and has carried out optimization work based on these results. Considering the characteristics of the holiday, which anticipates increased data traffic and call volumes in specific areas, it has also prepared a standby deployment system at key locations to respond promptly to any failures.
