China's Version of 'TikTok' Implements 40-Minute Daily Usage Limit for Teenagers

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] The Chinese version of the popular video-sharing application TikTok, called Douyin, has limited the usage time for children and adolescents under the age of 14 to 40 minutes per day.

Douyin recently announced this measure on its WeChat account on the 18th as part of its efforts to protect young users. Accordingly, all real-name registered users under the age of 14 are currently subject to a youth mode that restricts usage time and content.

In Douyin's youth mode, users can use the app for up to 40 minutes per day. Additionally, access is restricted from 10 PM to 6 AM the following day.

Douyin currently enjoys tremendous popularity in China, with over 600 million daily active users.

This measure appears to be a follow-up to the recent restriction limiting online gaming time for minors under 18 to three hours per week. Recently, the Chinese government implemented a policy restricting game access for those under 18 from Monday to Thursday, allowing gaming only for one hour from 8 PM to 9 PM on Fridays, weekends, and public holidays.
