[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The prosecution has sought a heavy sentence for a woman who, while driving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle in a state of severe intoxication late at night, struck and killed a worker at a construction site.
On the 17th, at a trial held before Judge Park So-yeon of the Criminal Division 7 at the Seoul Eastern District Court, the prosecution requested a 12-year prison sentence for the defendant, Kwon (30).
Kwon was indicted on charges of hitting and killing Mr. A (60), who was dismantling a subway soundproof wall near Ttukseom Station in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, with her Mercedes-Benz passenger car around 2 a.m. on May 24.
At the time of the accident, Kwon was driving at a speed of 148 km/h, and her blood alcohol concentration was 0.188%, which is at the level for license cancellation. It was also revealed that Kwon had previously received a summary order with a fine of 4 million won for drunk driving in August of last year.
Mr. A’s daughter, who appeared as a witness that day, tearfully said, "My father suffered severe organ damage and hemiplegia and could not pass away in a whole state," and pleaded, "Please punish the defendant severely."
The sentencing trial for Kwon is scheduled to be held on November 12.
