Naju City Urges Timely Sowing of 'Italian Grass'

[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) urged timely sowing for the stable production of 'Italian Ryegrass,' a representative winter forage crop.

According to the Naju Agricultural Technology Center on the 17th, the best sowing period for Italian Ryegrass (hereafter IRG) is from late this month to early next month.

If sowing is delayed by more than 10 days, production decreases by over 50%, and if the timing is missed, the sowing amount must be increased by 30-50%.

IRG grows well in fertile soil with excellent moisture retention, making it suitable for double cropping, but germination and growth are difficult in dry soil.

As a sowing method, broadcasting seeds 10-20 days before rice harvest during the seedling stage can improve germination rates and increase productivity.

After rice harvest, it is recommended to remove rice straw as quickly as possible and apply basal fertilizer.

In particular, pressing (compaction) before winter helps to adhere the soil and seeds closely, preventing roots from being exposed to cold winds, which promotes healthy growth.

The appropriate fertilization amount is 140 kg of nitrogen, 120 kg of phosphorus, and 120 kg of potassium per hectare, with nitrogen applied 30% before sowing and 70% as topdressing in early spring.

An official from the Agricultural Technology Center said, "Smooth forage production greatly helps livestock farmers reduce feed costs amid rising compound feed prices," and added, "For detailed inquiries about timely sowing, please contact the Livestock Division of the city hall or the agricultural consultation offices in towns, townships, and neighborhoods."
