'Muneungsik Moon Sent to Custody for Corruption Charges in Redevelopment Project Related to Gwangju Building Collapse Disaster'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Former Chairman Moon Heung-sik of the 5·18 Detained and Injured Association, who is suspected of being involved in the overall redevelopment project related to the Gwangju building collapse disaster that caused 17 casualties, has been handed over to the prosecution.

The Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 17th that Moon was sent to prosecution under arrest on charges of violating the Attorney-at-Law Act.

Moon is suspected of receiving several hundred million won from some companies and mediating the selection of demolition contractors in connection with the redevelopment project in Hakdong, Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, along with Lee (73), who was previously indicted and detained.

The police confirmed that Moon received several hundred million won from the general building demolition company 'Hansol Enterprise' and the asbestos removal company 'Dawon ENC,' and it is estimated that he received a total of about 1.5 billion won.

Moon left for Seattle, USA, on the 13th, four days after the building collapse disaster occurred on June 9.

He was identified as exerting influence over the entire redevelopment project and was under police investigation, reportedly fleeing the country just before being booked.

He voluntarily returned and was arrested by the police on the 11th, 90 days after his visa expired and the maximum allowed stay period for departure.
