[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] Seoul Huimun High School has imposed a severe disciplinary action of a 3-month suspension on teacher Jeong Mo, who was summary indicted for making abusive and offensive remarks against former Cheonanham Captain Choi Won-il.
Earlier in June, teacher Jeong posted on his social media service (SNS) comments containing harsh criticism such as "That XX who calls himself the Cheonanham captain is just showing off like XXX," "What kind of honor is the Cheonanham," and "Cheonanham is not the Sewol ferry, you XX."
After the controversy erupted and former Captain Choi expressed his intention to take legal action, Jeong deleted the posts. He also posted an apology, stating, "If I had met him in person, I wouldn't have said such things, but I carelessly wrote them thinking it was just the internet space, and I reflect on my actions."
However, civic groups held a press conference in front of Huimun High School demanding Jeong's dismissal. Former Captain Choi also filed a complaint against Jeong at the Seoul Investigation Police Station for defamation and insult, stating "There will be no leniency." Subsequently, on the 23rd of last month, the police sent Jeong to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on charges of insult, and on the 14th, the prosecution summary indicted Jeong.
According to a Huimun High School official, Jeong's disciplinary action was decided at the disciplinary committee meeting held on the 14th and passed by the board of directors the following day. Jeong may request a review of the disciplinary action.
