[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Genesis announced on the 16th that it plans to apply the ‘Face Connect’ technology, which controls the vehicle by recognizing the face, to GV60, Genesis’s first dedicated electric vehicle. GV60 is the first vehicle to apply facial recognition technology.
Face Connect recognizes the driver’s face and locks or unlocks the vehicle’s doors while simultaneously identifying the user. Through this, it adjusts the driver’s seat and steering wheel position, head-up display (HUD), side mirrors, and infotainment settings to suit the driver.
The company emphasized that this technology enables vehicle access and operation without a smart key or digital key, opening the era of driving cars solely with biometric information without keys in the future.
Genesis applied a near-infrared (NIR) camera to Face Connect to secure recognition performance equal to daytime even in dark conditions such as cloudy weather or nighttime. It uses deep learning-based image recognition technology to clearly determine whether the face is pre-registered.
It is also possible to lock the doors while leaving the smart key inside the vehicle. When locking the doors by facial recognition with the smart key inside the car, users can easily enjoy outdoor activities such as running or playing in the water without separately carrying the vehicle key.
Face Connect allows registration of up to two faces, and facial information can be registered easily and conveniently through voice guidance. The registered facial information is encrypted and securely stored inside the vehicle, so there is no risk of leakage, and it can be deleted anytime at the driver’s request.

When linked with the ‘Fingerprint Authentication System’ to be applied together in GV60, the vehicle can be perfectly controlled solely by biometric information without a separate smartphone or smart key. The driver can start and drive the vehicle by fingerprint recognition after boarding through facial recognition.
Additionally, PIN code input required for in-vehicle simple payment or valet mode release can be replaced by fingerprint authentication, enhancing both customer convenience and security.
Genesis will also significantly expand the application scope of the ‘Over-the-Air (OTA) Software Update’ technology.
The scope of OTA software updates, previously limited to infotainment systems such as navigation, cluster, and HUD, will be expanded to the entire vehicle, enabling updates to major electronic control devices such as the integrated electric vehicle control unit, suspension, brakes, steering wheel, and airbags.
Genesis plans to equip these new technologies in the soon-to-be-released GV60 and gradually expand the applicable models. A Genesis official said, "We expect Face Connect technology to elevate the vehicle usage experience to the next level," adding, "We will lead with innovative technology centered on people so that customers can communicate and interact with their vehicles."
