[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A 10-year-old elementary school girl passing by a construction site was involved in an accident while avoiding a crane cable, and the site manager's remark to "stop making a scene" has sparked controversy.

On the 14th, a video titled "Elementary Student Injured While Avoiding Crane" was posted on the YouTube channel 'Han Moon-cheol TV.' The video shows that around 3 p.m. on May 3rd, 10-year-old twin siblings were passing in front of a construction site. Suddenly, without any signalman present, a crane cable swung down at the site where work was ongoing, and while avoiding it, the younger sister collided with a moving car.

As a result of the accident, the elementary school student was diagnosed with a three-week recovery period and was hospitalized. However, the construction site manager reportedly made inappropriate remarks to the police such as, "(The child) didn’t even touch the car but is making a scene," "Raise your kid properly," and "If you want to report it, go ahead. You just have to pay a fine."

The mother of the elementary student, Ms. A, who reported the incident, stated, "The treatment costs were covered by the car insurance company, but the construction site manager told the police that the child didn’t even touch the car and was just making a scene, telling me to raise my kid properly. He said if I wanted to report it, I could, but I would only have to pay a fine, and he didn’t offer a single apology."

She continued, "If you watch the video, you can see the child hit the car and bounce off. Due to COVID-19, visits were not allowed, and the 10-year-old was hospitalized for three weeks, crying every night and calling home, spending Children’s Day in the hospital," adding, "The twin brother who witnessed the accident is blaming himself for not being able to stop it. I want the construction site manager to be punished."

A lawyer conducted a live poll asking netizens whether the construction site safety manager should be punished, and viewers unanimously agreed that the manager should be held accountable.

The lawyer stated, "Since the accident occurred due to the crane causing alarm, the site manager should be punished for professional negligence causing injury," and added, "There should have been a signalman for such crane operations. Since there was none, the site manager must take responsibility."

He further noted, "If punished, it would likely be a fine rather than imprisonment."
