“Usable While Swimming” Samsung Develops Detachable Neckband Wireless Earphones... Patent Filed

[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] Samsung Electronics is developing wireless earphones that can be attached and detached from a neckband and used underwater.

According to IT specialized media LetsGoDigital on the 14th, Samsung Electronics filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in March last year to combine the wireless earphone Galaxy Buds series and the neckband earbud form factor into a single product. This was disclosed on the 10th under the title "Wearable device wearable on user's ear and communication support accessory."

The disclosed content is a kind of hybrid model. It consists of the typical Buds series including a charging case and a neckband accessory with earbuds attached at both ends to be worn around the back of the neck. Until now, neckband-type wireless earphones had ear tips connected by short cords at the ends of the neckband, but this design allows them to be detachable.

Waterproof functionality is also included. LetsGoDigital reported, "You can use the earbuds while swimming underwater," and "The disclosed patent documents detail plans to develop earphones that can be used underwater while swimming." However, the media added that it is unknown whether Samsung Electronics will actually release such a neckband accessory for Galaxy Buds. The Galaxy Buds Pro, released earlier this year, received IPX7 certification, allowing it to withstand underwater depths of up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics first introduced neckband-type wireless earphones with the Level U in 2015. At the end of last year, it also launched the new Level U2. Neckband types are highly portable and have shown steady popularity among salespeople with active outdoor lifestyles, delivery workers, and the elderly.
