Work Depicting Women's Abortion Conflict... Female Director Wins Award Two Years in a Row
"Revenge," directed by Audrey Diwan (France), won the Golden Lion at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Bong Joon-ho, the jury president, announced at the awards ceremony held on the 11th (local time) at the Palazzo del Cinema in Venice, Italy, that "the jury reached a unanimous decision very quickly." The film depicts the conflict experienced by a French female college student in 1963 who decides to have an abortion after an unintended pregnancy. It attracted significant attention as it was released amid growing controversy over women's abortion rights. Recently, the U.S. state of Texas enacted a strict 'abortion ban law,' while the Mexican Supreme Court legalized abortion.
Director Diwan stated, "I made 'Revenge' with anger and desire, my womb, my courage, my heart, and my mind." Since the Venice Film Festival's inception in 1932, this is only the sixth time a film directed by a woman has won the Golden Lion. Chloe Zhao, director of last year's fifth honoree "Nomadland," participated this year as a jury member. The Grand Jury Prize went to Paolo Sorrentino's "The Hand of God," and the Best Director award was given to Jane Campion for "The Power of the Dog." Pen?lope Cruz won Best Actress for "Parallel Mothers," and John Arcilla received Best Actor for "On the Job: The Missing 8." Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal won the Best Screenplay award for her directorial debut, "The Lost Daughter."
