[Asia Economy Online Issue Team] A story about a wife who used her mother-in-law's condolence money as a congratulatory gift for her father-in-law's 70th birthday stirred viewers' anger.
On the 2nd, the 30th episode of KBS Joy's entertainment program 'Sseol Survival' aired stories designed to provoke anger, themed as 'Spicy Taste'.
On this day, a story titled 'Extortion' was shared, recounting events that happened during the married life of a wife who met her husband three years ago through a blind date and fell in love at first sight.
The storyteller of the 'Extortion' story planned to find a newlywed home close to his workplace while preparing for marriage, but his father-in-law and mother-in-law offered their house for them to live in and told them to bring their wedding gifts. He agreed to this, even though the distance to work was about two hours, out of consideration for his wife and her family.
However, the mother-in-law changed her attitude after the marriage. She complained, saying, "If you had rented it out, you could have earned some living expenses, but having a daughter is a sin," showing off while also whining. The wife demanded, "Let's treat it as our rent and send mom 700,000 won every month as allowance." The storyteller reluctantly accepted this.
Once, at the wife's request, the storyteller bought a new car for their future baby and even took the mother-in-law for a test drive. Upon seeing the new car, the mother-in-law said, "This car looks really sturdy. Our car is old, and last time on the highway, it almost broke down and we almost died." Shocked by this, the wife insisted that since the baby was still far from being born, they should give the new car to her parents. The storyteller had to give up the new car to his in-laws and ended up buying a used car to drive around.
Later, a bigger incident occurred. The storyteller received a call that his mother had fallen and was taken to the hospital. He urgently informed his wife, but she coldly responded, "I'm busy too. I’m picking up after my mom’s meeting. If you’re really worried, go see her yourself. Don’t you know filial piety is self-service?"
The storyteller rushed to the hospital himself, but his mother had already passed away. What was even more shocking happened during the funeral. The wife took the condolence money meant for the storyteller’s mother and said, "Our dad’s 70th birthday party is in a few days. I’m saving the congratulatory money in advance."
The storyteller exploded in anger at his wife. However, she said, "What use is money to someone who passed away? It’s more important to show filial piety to living parents. My mom and dad are my family. You become a stranger once we separate," making an outrageous remark.
The storyteller concluded by revealing that he divorced his wife. Comedian Kim Ji-min, who appeared on 'Sseol Survival,' expressed disbelief, saying, "Isn't this marriage abuse?" Park Na-rae criticized the wife, saying, "The daughter feels like a puppet of her parents. She hasn’t yet stepped out of her parents’ protective fence."
