[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] Gwangju Dong-gu (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 29th that it will hold the ‘Dong-gu Moonlight Walk’ talk concert by inviting history lecturer Choi Tae-sung at 7:30 PM on the 3rd of next month at the 5·18 Democracy Square.

This ‘Meeting with Big Star Teacher Choi Tae-sung’ will be conducted as an online tour searching for traces of Gwangju Eupseong, which disappeared during the Japanese colonial period, and a talk concert titled ‘Invisible Fortress, Meeting Gwangju Eupseong.’

Starting from the East Gate, the online tour will take a round trip around Gwangju Dong-gu, visiting the guesthouse, government office, Heegyeongru site, and the Chinese scholar tree site that were located within the old site of Eupseong.

The talk concert with a storytelling companion will provide an opportunity to re-examine the historical value of Gwangju Eupseong, which was destroyed by the Japanese but holds the tumultuous and brilliant memories of Gwangju.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, social distancing and quarantine rules will be followed, and those wishing to participate in the talk show can apply in advance from the 30th on the ‘Gwangju Cultural Heritage Night Tour’ website.

As a storytelling companion, Cheon Deuk-yeom, Director of the Korean Studies Honam Promotion Institute, will appear to share stories about the lives of ancestors by tracing the footsteps of Gwangju Eupseong, which has been with Gwangju for over 500 years, and its predecessors.

Additionally, the open studio ‘Our Neighborhood Cultural Heritage Story’ is a talk show where Dong-gu residents directly participate to discuss cultural heritage, and it will be held on the 3rd-4th and 10th-11th of next month at the 5·18 Democracy Square and the Gwangju Eupseong Historic Site.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “The Gwangju Cultural Heritage Night Tour is a program to learn about and rediscover the value of local cultural heritage that we have passed by,” adding, “As lecturer Choi Tae-sung said, ‘Finding answers in history,’ I hope this will be an opportunity to reestablish a historical perspective along with a sense of affection for the region through the cultural heritage scattered throughout Gwangju Dong-gu.”
