Suncheon City Hosts Webinar to Commemorate Suncheonman Bay Mudflat's World Heritage Registration

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 24th that it will hold a webinar on the 31st to commemorate the inscription of Suncheonman Bay Wetland as a World Heritage site.

A webinar is a compound word of Web and Seminar, referring to a real-time seminar conducted on the internet using an interactive online video conferencing platform.

The city planned the webinar to commemorate the inscription of Suncheonman Bay Wetland as a World Heritage site and to seek efficient conservation and sustainable use of Suncheonman, considering the COVID-19 situation.

This webinar, under the theme "30 Years of Suncheonman Conservation History, Blooming as a World Heritage Flower," will feature participation from international organizations, domestic and foreign experts, and Suncheon citizens to propose various opinions.

In the keynote speech, the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) will speak about "The Great Flight of the Far Eastern Curlew," and Professor Kim Jong-sung of Seoul National University will lecture on "The Value of Korean Tidal Flats."

Following this, the program will proceed in order with Session 1, "Remembering 30 Years of Suncheonman Conservation History," Session 2, "Drawing the Future of UNESCO City, Suncheon," and Session 3, a comprehensive discussion on "Suncheonman World Heritage Inscription and Future Management Directions."

Side events will also be held. After the webinar ends, the "Suncheonman Bay Wetland Concert" will begin around 6:50 PM at Waon Beach (located in Haeryong-myeon), known for its beautiful sunset.

The tidal flat concert, led by singer-songwriter Park Sung-hoon as general director, will sing about "Suncheon's history embraced by Suncheonman," and "The ecological city's steps toward coexistence and peace between nature and humans."

Guests for the talk include Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon, poet Kwak Jae-gu, and director Hwang Yoon, who will discuss the future of Suncheonman and, further, the dreams and hopes of Korean tidal flats.

Additionally, the opening performance will be by the "Inan Elementary School Choir," born and raised in Suncheonman, singing the joy of the World Heritage inscription.

Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, "Thanks to the efforts of citizens who chose coexistence with Suncheonman over the past 30 years, Suncheonman has been inscribed as a World Heritage site. I thank those who protected the tidal flats," adding, "The agenda discussed in the webinar will be actively reflected in policies after review by the relevant departments to preserve the outstanding universal value of Suncheonman Bay Wetland."

Meanwhile, considering the COVID-19 situation, this event will be conducted via online live streaming and can be viewed on Suncheon City's YouTube channel from around 1:30 PM on the day of the event.
