‘Millennium Bamboo Grove, Responding to Climate Crisis and Promoting Health in Damyang’... Policy to Enhance Health Using Bamboo Forests 추진

Damyang-gun Selected for Excellence Award in Korea Healthy City Contest

[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] As bamboo has recently emerged as a strategic environmental tree species to cope with the climate crisis, Damyang County is continuously promoting the expansion of bamboo forests along with its county administration philosophy of pursuing a ‘sustainable ecological city.’

Damyang County, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 24th that it was selected for the Excellence Award in the 6th Korea Healthy City Awards contest hosted by the Korea Healthy Cities Association.

Damyang County was selected in the joint policy field under the theme of climate change response with ‘Millennium Bamboo Forest, Damyang Saving Health and Responding to the Climate Crisis,’ and is scheduled to receive the award at the regular general meeting of the Korea Healthy Cities Association to be held in October.

The ‘Korea Healthy City Awards’ is a healthy city contest that discovers and selects exemplary cases among member cities of metropolitan and basic local governments affiliated with the Korea Healthy Cities Association.

Since joining in September 2019, Damyang County has established the ‘Damyang County Healthy City Basic Plan 2030,’ setting 16 tasks and 44 indicators for implementation.

It is also actively promoting health improvement using bamboo.

Not only developing bamboo health functional foods such as bamboo soap, Juknok tea, and bamboo leaf tea, and bamboo-based health products, but also providing free use of bamboo forest parks including Juknokwon for residents, organizing the Two Feet Jukjuk (竹竹) Healthy Walking Contest, Bamboo Forest Children’s Health Classes, and various programs, which have received positive responses.

A county official said, “We will continue to create a healthy ecological city Damyang by prioritizing policies that put nature and residents’ health first.”
