[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Samsung Display unveiled the 'UPC' technology on the 18th, which integrates the front camera of a smartphone into the panel to eliminate the camera hole. This technology was first applied to the foldable display of the Galaxy Z Fold3 recently unveiled by Samsung Electronics.
The UPC technology places the camera module at the bottom of the panel and activates the camera only when needed, allowing the entire screen to be used 100% when the camera is not in use. Existing punch-hole smartphones implement the front camera by cutting a circular portion of the panel to expose the camera lens, making that area unusable as part of the screen. However, UPC technology enables the use of the screen even in the area where the camera lens was previously located.
Samsung Display minimized color deviation between the UPC hole and the surrounding area. The global certification body UL reported that the color deviation between the Samsung UPC and the surrounding panel recorded less than 1 JNCD, a unit indicating color accuracy. A 1 JNCD means the image quality uniformity is at a level where the human eye cannot distinguish the difference.
Samsung Display explained that the UPC technology was made possible through 'Eco²OLED™', which increases the panel's light transmittance, and pixel aperture ratio optimization technology. In particular, 'Eco²OLED™' is a technology that increases light transmittance by more than 33% compared to previous panels, allowing more light to reach the camera module at the bottom of the panel, enabling the commercialization of UPC technology. Samsung Display has completed trademark applications for 'Eco²OLED™', which significantly reduces power consumption through high luminous efficiency, in seven countries including Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Japan.
Lee Hojung, Executive Director of Samsung Display's Product Planning Team, said, "The display industry has continuously worked to increase screen-to-body ratio by reducing bezels and minimizing camera holes in response to the growing demand for large-screen smartphones," adding, "UPC is the ultimate technology for implementing full-screen displays and will provide consumers with a completely different user experience."
