Seol Kyung-gu Starring 'Yacha' Heads to Netflix

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The film "Yacha," which brings together actor Seol Kyung-gu and director Na Hyun, is heading to home screens.

On the 12th, Showbox announced that it has signed an OTT broadcasting rights license agreement for the film "Yacha" with Netflix. Accordingly, the film will be available on Netflix in all service countries except China.

"Yacha" began filming in 2019 and wrapped up in the first half of 2020. Since then, Showbox had been considering a theatrical release but recently decided after much deliberation to sign a supply contract with Netflix. The release date is yet to be determined.

The film is the new work of director Na Hyun, who attracted 2.93 million viewers with "Prison." It is an action movie depicting the events that unfold as the leader of the National Intelligence Service's overseas secret operations team in Shenyang, China, and a prosecutor demoted to the National Intelligence Service search for a missing high-ranking North Korean official.

Seol Kyung-gu plays the leader of the NIS Shenyang branch and the black team in charge of overseas operations, known as the ghost "Yacha" who devours people, while Park Hae-soo portrays a prosecutor who was demoted to the NIS Legal Advisory Office for investigating a conglomerate chairman and is sent to audit the Chinese secret operations team. Additionally, actors Yang Dong-geun, Lee El, Song Jae-rim, and GOT7's Park Jin-young also appear. The story is expected to unfold intriguingly among spies from South Korea, North Korea, Japan, and other countries.

Previously, several films such as "Time to Hunt" and "Space Sweepers," which were originally intended for theatrical release, chose to go to the OTT platform Netflix instead due to the impact of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus infection). It is anticipated that similar choices will continue for films including "Yacha" in the second half of this year.
