On the 6th, the province announced that it will build Jeonnam-only tourism content that stimulates interest by transcending physical and temporal limitations through metaverse technologies such as virtual and augmented reality for the MZ generation, a potential tourism consumer group.
The MZ generation is a term collectively referring to the Millennial generation born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s and Generation Z born from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s.
Metaverse is a compound word of ‘Meta,’ meaning transcendence or virtual, and ‘Universe,’ meaning the real world.
This year, the province plans to prepare measures to revitalize Jeollanam-do’s tourism industry using the metaverse and establish a mid- to long-term promotion strategy for building Jeonnam tourism-type metaverse content based on this.
To this end, it is cooperating with the Jeonnam Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency to design metaverse tourism content and is receiving business advice from five specialized planning advisory members.
In particular, through discussions with the advisory group, the province plans to finalize the platform selection and scope of construction for metaverse content by the end of this month, select a content production company next month, and build the first phase of the Jeonnam Tourism Promotion Center by the end of this year.
Next year, as the second phase of the project, the plan is to expand various tourism content spaces of cities and counties within the Jeonnam Tourism Promotion Center using the metaverse platform.
Additionally, various events will be promoted so that the Jeonnam travel experienced in the metaverse space leads to curiosity and promotion of local tourism resources and eventually to actual visits to Jeonnam.
Yoo Mija, head of the Tourism Division of Jeonnam Province, said, “Building a Jeonnam tourism content promotion center using metaverse technology is a new attempt in Jeonnam tourism promotion marketing,” adding, “By establishing a metaverse platform tourism promotion center that will generate fun and curiosity, Jeonnam will lead the future tourism industry.”
