[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] As the 4th wave of COVID-19 continues, new confirmed cases were reported across the country on the 5th as well.


According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, a total of 1,574 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were recorded nationwide from midnight to 9 p.m. This is 75 fewer than the 1,649 cases recorded at the same time the previous day.


It is also 18 fewer than the 1,592 cases reported last Thursday (29th), one week ago.


By region, 1,010 cases (64.2%) were from the metropolitan area, and 564 cases (35.8%) were from non-metropolitan areas.


By city and province, Seoul reported 463 cases, Gyeonggi 446, Incheon 101, Daegu 84, Busan 83, Gyeongnam 76, Gyeongbuk 56, Chungnam 53, Daejeon 41, Chungbuk 36, Jeonbuk 28, Gangwon 25, Ulsan 24, Jeju 16, Jeonnam 15, Gwangju 14, and Sejong 13.


All 17 cities and provinces nationwide reported confirmed cases.


Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0 a.m. on the 6th is expected to increase further, reaching the high 1,600s or around 1,700 at most.


The previous day, 127 additional cases were reported after 9 p.m., bringing the final total to 1,776.


The 4th wave, which began in early last month centered on the metropolitan area, has recently spread to various non-metropolitan areas, showing signs of nationwide spread.


The daily confirmed cases have remained in the four-digit range for a month since the 7th of last month (1,212 cases), and the 6th will mark the 31st consecutive day.


Looking at the new confirmed cases reported over the past week from the 30th of last month to the 5th, the daily numbers were 1,710 → 1,539 → 1,442 → 1,218 → 1,200 → 1,725 → 1,776, fluctuating between 1,200 and 1,700 cases.
