Seoul 397 - Gyeonggi 387 - Incheon 83, Total 867 in 수도권, 492 in Non-capital Areas
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Amid the ongoing 4th wave of COVID-19 in South Korea, new confirmed cases continued to emerge across the country on the 5th.
According to health authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, a total of 1,359 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported nationwide from midnight to 6 p.m. This is 116 fewer than the 1,475 cases reported the previous day.
This is also 44 fewer than the 1,403 cases reported last Thursday (29th), a week ago.
As of 6 p.m., the interim tally of confirmed cases had consistently exceeded 1,000 daily, except for a brief drop to triple digits at 887 cases on the 2nd earlier this week, but has since returned to the 1,300 to 1,400 range.
By region, 867 cases (63.8%) were reported in the Seoul metropolitan area, and 492 cases (36.2%) in non-metropolitan areas.
By city and province, the numbers are as follows: Seoul 397, Gyeonggi 387, Busan and Incheon 83 each, Daegu 78, Gyeongnam 76, Chungnam 49, Gyeongbuk 48, Chungbuk 34, Daejeon 25, Gangwon 19, Jeonbuk 18, Jeju 16, Ulsan 15, Sejong 12, Jeonnam 10, and Gwangju 9.
Confirmed cases were reported in all 17 cities and provinces nationwide. Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced at 0:00 on the 6th is expected to increase to around 1,600, possibly reaching about 1,700.
On the previous day, 301 additional cases were reported after 6 p.m., bringing the final total to 1,776.
The 4th wave, which began in early last month centered on the Seoul metropolitan area, has recently spread to various non-metropolitan regions, showing signs of nationwide spread.
Daily confirmed cases have remained in the four-digit range for a month since the 7th of last month (1,212 cases), making the 6th the 31st consecutive day.
