30s Man Arrested for Drunk Driving, Killing Pedestrian, and Abandoning the Body

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A man in his 30s who fatally struck a pedestrian while driving under the influence and then abandoned the body in an agricultural waterway in Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi Province, has been arrested by the police.

The Yongin Eastern Police Station in Gyeonggi announced on the 4th that Mr. A was detained on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (abandonment causing death).

Mr. A is accused of driving his Porter truck under the influence on a two-lane road in Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi Province, around 8:30 p.m. on the 28th of last month, hitting Mr. B (in his 60s), who was walking along the roadside pulling a handcart, causing his death, and then abandoning the body.

He is also suspected of fleeing the scene after the accident but returning around 4:50 a.m. the next day, the 29th, confirming Mr. B’s death, and pushing the body into an agricultural waterway about 2 to 3 meters away to abandon it.

According to the police, Mr. B’s body was discovered by a passerby around 5:30 a.m. on the same day. After receiving a 112 emergency call, the police confirmed vehicle debris at the accident scene, analyzed nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, and found Mr. A’s vehicle at a car repair shop about 5 kilometers from the accident site.

The police confirmed that the damage on the vehicle matched the debris collected at the scene, interrogated Mr. A at the car repair shop, obtained a confession, and then urgently arrested him.

During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he fled because he was afraid after causing a traffic accident while driving under the influence and then abandoned the body.
