Revenge Spending Surges... Q2 Online Transactions Reach Record High of 46 Trillion Won


[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] As the time spent at home increased due to COVID-19, the online shopping transaction amount in the second quarter recorded an all-time high. Food services such as delivery food and food and groceries accounted for the largest share.


According to the online shopping trends for the second quarter of this year announced by Statistics Korea on the 4th, the online shopping transaction amount in the second quarter was 46.8885 trillion won, an increase of 25.1% compared to a year ago, marking an all-time high.


By product category, food services jumped more than 58.7% compared to a year ago, and beverages and food also increased by about 34.4%, showing a remarkable increase in food-related transactions.


Due to the increase in online food service transactions, mobile shopping transactions, which have a high related share, also recorded an all-time high of 33.3042 trillion won.


The most traded items were food delivery services (17.8%), food and groceries (13.3%), and home appliances, electronics, and communication devices (10.4%) in that order.


Meanwhile, the online shopping transaction amount and mobile shopping transaction amount in June recorded 15.6558 trillion won and 10.9951 trillion won, respectively.
