[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] POSCO International announced on the 4th that it is expanding its efforts for the global ecosystem by supporting academic research for biodiversity conservation.

On the 3rd, POSCO International signed a support agreement with the research team led by Professor Choi Jae-cheon, Chair Professor of the Department of EcoScience at Ewha Womans University, for the "Research on the Javan Gibbon in Indonesia for Biodiversity."

POSCO International will support the Ewha Womans University Department of EcoScience research team’s study on the Javan gibbon in Indonesia for three years. Since 2007, the research team has been conducting active research leading both domestically and internationally, publishing behavioral ecology studies of the Indonesian gibbon in international academic journals as part of the Ewha Womans University EcoScience Department project.

The Javan gibbon is a primate belonging to the Hominoidea family, which includes apes, and unlike other apes such as chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas, it forms a monogamous society similar to humans. However, due to habitat destruction and illegal trade, it is endangered and relatively less studied.

Based on their foundational research so far, the team plans to conduct more in-depth studies on social learning and co-evolution with the surrounding environment to investigate the behavioral ecology of wild Javan gibbon populations.

Chair Professor Choi Jae-cheon said, "Studying the behavior of wild Javan gibbons is a very challenging task," and expressed expectations, saying, "With POSCO International’s support, we will achieve results in protecting the habitat and increasing the population of the endangered gibbons."

POSCO International President Ju Si-bo also said, "We are pleased to create opportunities to contribute to biodiversity conservation activities in Indonesia, where our company operates, while fulfilling corporate social responsibility," adding, "We will continue to actively support and engage as a corporate citizen protecting the global ecosystem."

Meanwhile, POSCO International plans to actively support future education and research projects related to biodiversity conducted by the research team within the premises of POSCO International PT.BIA, located in Papua Province, Indonesia.
