[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Germany will begin administering COVID-19 vaccine booster shots starting next month, becoming the third country after Israel and the United Kingdom.
German health authorities announced on the 2nd (local time) that they plan to start booster shots for the elderly and immunocompromised individuals from September, AFP reported.
Health Minister Jens Spahn stated, "The elderly and immunocompromised are at the highest risk of reduced vaccine effectiveness," adding, "Medical staff will visit nursing facilities to administer the vaccines."
The third dose will use messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines such as Pfizer and Moderna. The German Ministry of Health also said, "We plan to offer booster shots as a preventive measure to those who received AstraZeneca or Janssen vaccines."
Leading countries in vaccination have consecutively started booster shot campaigns. Israel began administering booster shots to immunocompromised individuals on the 12th of last month, followed by the UK starting next month.
Germany will also begin vaccinating adolescents aged 12 to 17. The Ministry of Health emphasized, "Vaccinating adolescents will help ensure a safe return to school after summer vacation."
Compared to neighboring countries, Germany has shown relatively low infection rates, but confirmed cases are gradually increasing due to the spread of the Delta variant.
Minister Jens Spahn said, "We have secured enough vaccines for all age groups," and added, "Those who wish can get vaccinated during the summer."
