[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 3rd that it has simultaneously obtained 'Carbon Footprint' and 'Water Footprint' certifications from the UK Carbon Trust, becoming the first in the stacked ceramic capacitor (MLCC) and semiconductor package substrate industries to do so.
The Carbon Trust is a certification body established by the UK government to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Carbon Footprint and Water Footprint certifications are awarded to companies that proactively respond to climate change by calculating the carbon and water emissions generated from before manufacturing to production of their products.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics evaluated the environmental impacts such as carbon emissions and water usage throughout all processes from raw and subsidiary material processing of MLCC and substrates to product manufacturing, passing the international audit standards PAS2050 and ISO14046 to obtain the Carbon Footprint and Water Footprint certifications.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics explained that it minimizes water usage and carbon emissions by optimizing facility operations and improving resource efficiency. It has reduced carbon emissions through process improvement activities such as introducing high-efficiency energy-saving equipment and switching to standby mode when equipment is not operating. Additionally, it reduced water usage by reusing concentrated water generated during manufacturing in other facilities, and has conducted various activities to respond to climate change, including transparently disclosing greenhouse gas emissions from overseas business sites through third-party verification.
Earlier, Samsung Electro-Mechanics' MLCC and semiconductor package substrates also received Carbon Footprint and Water Footprint certifications from the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute under the Ministry of Environment in June.
Kyung Kye-hyun, CEO of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, stated, "For sustainable management, we prioritize stable profits, the pursuit of happiness for members of society, and the realization of environmental responsibility." He added, "Samsung Electro-Mechanics will actively respond to climate change and practice sustainable management and social responsibility management."
