In a Video Expressing Resignation Reflections, Jeju Called “Mom”… Second Time Since Running for Governor

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] On the 1st, the day Won Hee-ryong, Governor of Jeju Province, held a resignation press conference, a short 3 minutes and 55 seconds video capturing his reflections as the top official of Jeju Province over the past seven years drew attention on his YouTube channel.

In the video, Governor Won referred to Jeju as 'Mom.' This was the second time he used the expression 'Mom' for Jeju, the first being when he announced his candidacy for the Jeju Governor election at Gwandeokjeong in Jeju City in 2014.

At that time, his candidacy statement included, "Jeju is the mother who raised me. My beloved mother Jeju called me to bring change and open a new era."

Governor Won called Jeju 'Mom' again as he stepped down from his governorship to take on a new challenge in the presidential election and headed back to Seoul.

Throughout the video, Governor Won wore a solemn expression, reflecting the gravity of his presidential bid and the regret of leaving Jeju.

He also revealed the anguish he experienced before resigning from his post.

Governor Won said, "I hesitated a lot and went through painful times until I decided to resign without completing my term. I repeatedly wondered with a heavy heart, 'Is this the best choice?'" He added, "But now our country is pushed to the edge, and I could no longer stand by. I thought someone must restore the nation to normal."

He continued, "There is no personal greed or hidden desire," and explained his reason for running for president: "What I wish for is only one thing?a country where everyone's happiness is precious, and the next generation lives better. I sincerely want to create such a country."

Then, after introducing achievements over seven years, including the '2030 Carbon Free Island Project,' he said, "These are glorious records created by all the residents. We have pioneered the future of the Republic of Korea," adding, "I am very proud of you all. I will set this country right with Jeju's pride."
