Former President Obama to Hold Large Birthday Party Despite COVID-19 Spread Concerns

Former President Obama to Hold Large Birthday Party Despite COVID-19 Spread Concerns

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Former U.S. President Barack Obama is reportedly planning to hold a large-scale birthday party to celebrate his 60th birthday despite concerns over the spread of COVID-19, according to the American internet media Axios on the 1st (local time).

Axios, citing sources, reported that the party to celebrate former President Obama's 60th birthday is scheduled to take place this weekend on Martha's Vineyard, a luxury resort island in Massachusetts. Martha's Vineyard was a favorite vacation spot for Obama during his presidency.

475 people, including family, acquaintances, former aides, and celebrities, have confirmed their attendance, and more than 200 staff members will be involved in preparing for the party.

Among the invitees is film director Steven Spielberg, and the rock band Pearl Jam is set to perform a congratulatory concert. The White House stated that President Joe Biden, who served as vice president during Obama's administration, will not attend.

The issue is that COVID-19 cases have been increasing in Provincetown, Massachusetts, not far from Martha's Vineyard, with breakthrough infections surging since the Independence Day holiday on the 4th of last month.

Recently, new COVID-19 cases have been rapidly increasing across the United States, raising concerns about events that gather large crowds.

However, former President Obama's side has stated that the event will be conducted according to COVID-19 prevention protocols. The party is planned to be held outdoors, and all attendees will be vaccinated and tested for COVID-19, according to sources. However, representatives from Obama's side did not respond to whether attendees will be required to wear masks.

Martha's Vineyard is not classified as a high-risk area for COVID-19 spread according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. A state government official told Axios that Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker also said he was unaware of this event.
