[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Yeongcheon City announced on the 1st that it is strengthening the removal of harmful substances by adjusting the concentration of chlorine input and adding powdered activated carbon, as well as inspecting pollution sources, monitoring water quality, and enhancing water purification treatment in preparation for the issuance of the Yeongcheonho Algae Warning System.
Earlier, the Daegu Regional Environmental Office issued an algae warning at the "Attention" level for Yeongcheonho on July 29 at 3 p.m., following the occurrence of algae at 89,576 cells/㎖.
This algae outbreak is believed to have resulted from a suitable environment for the proliferation of harmful cyanobacteria due to continuous heatwaves after the early July monsoon season, along with increased water temperature and sunlight, leading to massive growth.
Choi Ki-moon, Mayor of Yeongcheon City, stated, "Due to the continued heatwave this year, there are concerns about the massive and prolonged proliferation of algae," adding, "We will establish a thorough algae response system at a warning level one step higher than the attention stage and do our best to produce clean and safe tap water."
