On the 29th, Jo Gu-ham defeated Jorge Fonseca (Portugal) by seoi nage waza-ari in the semifinals of the men's 100kg judo event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, advancing to the final.
World No. 6 Jo Gu-ham had a close match against No. 2 Fonseca. Fonseca complained of finger pain early in the match, causing the match to be paused for a few seconds.
With 16 seconds remaining, Jo Gu-ham scored a waza-ari with his specialty, seoi nage, gaining an advantageous position. He then successfully defended against attacks for the remainder of the time to secure the victory.
Jo Gu-ham is the first Korean judo athlete to advance to the final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
