Suncheon City Women's Association Creates 'Nanum Garden' Utilizing Idle Land

Suncheon City Women's Association Creates 'Nanum Garden' Utilizing Idle Land

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Suncheon City Women's Association (President Choi Kyung-hee) announced on the 29th that it donated a garden created by utilizing idle urban spaces to Suncheon City.

The sharing garden, created by utilizing the idle land of Wangji No.1 Public Parking Lot, was established by female association members who purchased about 1,000 azaleas and golden euonymus at their own expense, together with the Wangjo 1-dong Citizen Garden Promotion Team, to promote citizen participation in the expo and spread garden culture in the city.

Along with the garden creation, environmental maintenance was also carried out, including removing overgrown weeds in the street flower beds around the site, pruning trees, and picking up trash.

Going forward, the sharing garden will be continuously maintained and cared for not only by the female association members but also by the Wangjo 1-dong Citizen Garden Promotion Team.

Heo Seok, Mayor of Suncheon, said, “Just as the ‘Suncheonman Bay Garden,’ the nation’s first national garden, was born after the 2013 Garden Expo, I hope that after the 2023 Garden Expo, Suncheon will leap forward as the country’s first ‘No.1 Garden City.’ I hope that today’s sharing garden will serve as a fuse to ignite a boom of participation by local organizations in spreading gardens throughout the city.”

Meanwhile, the Suncheon City Women's Association has been steadily participating in creating a garden city, including establishing a mini-garden pilot street to promote the movement of placing flowerpots in front of homes and stores.
