Lotte Super Introduces 'Eco Box' Instead of Styrofoam for Cold Chain Distribution of Seafood

S-Lab Asia Business Agreement ... Pilot Operation of 500 'Greenie Eco Boxes'

Lotte Super Introduces 'Eco Box' Instead of Styrofoam for Cold Chain Distribution of Seafood

[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Lotte Super is replacing the commonly used Styrofoam packaging in the seafood cold chain (low-temperature distribution network) delivery process with plastic.

On the 29th, Lotte Super announced that it signed a business agreement with logistics startup 'S.Lab Asia' and will pilot 500 units of the cold chain box 'Greeny Eco Box' starting from the 30th. S.Lab Asia operates 'Greeny Medi,' used as a container for transporting COVID-19 vaccines, and 'Greeny Food Box,' a container for fresh food delivery.

The Greeny Eco Box features insulation inside the plastic box using a special fabric, providing better insulation performance and freshness preservation compared to Styrofoam. Because of this, it can reduce the use of refrigerants such as ice or dry ice, and after sterilization and cleaning, it can be reused continuously for more than three years as long as it is not damaged.

Lotte Super expects that replacing Styrofoam boxes, which are used to supply seafood from all over the country, with Greeny Eco Boxes will reduce Styrofoam consumption by 22 tons annually and save about 200 million KRW in costs for delivery partners who purchase Styrofoam boxes.

Accordingly, after the pilot operation, Lotte Super plans to gradually reduce Styrofoam usage by applying Greeny Eco Boxes to seafood logistics and delivery, including shellfish, abalone, and convenient seafood products, together with various partners such as Lotte Trading.

Kang Ho-jin, Head of Fresh Division at Lotte Super, said, "At a time when the importance of environmental protection and sustainable management is more prominent than ever, we will strengthen ESG management by introducing eco-friendly cold chain boxes to reduce Styrofoam used in seafood delivery to zero."
