Instagram announced on the 28th, "New users under the age of 16 will have their accounts automatically set to 'private' during the sign-up process."
Existing users under the age of 16 will see a pop-up explaining the benefits of private accounts and how to set them. Users can change their account visibility whenever they wish.
The company explained that private accounts, which allow only approved people to follow, are one way to provide a safer Instagram experience for teenagers.
Instagram also plans to introduce several additional features aimed at protecting teenagers from unwanted interactions in certain countries.
