[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] Athletes participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are complaining about the hot and humid local weather. The possibility of a large typhoon affecting Tokyo is increasing, raising concerns among athletes competing in outdoor venues.
On the 24th (local time), CNN reported that some athletes are having difficulty managing their condition due to Japan's midsummer weather.
Novak Djokovic, the world No. 1 male tennis player, suggested postponing match times to the evening for the remainder of the Olympics after passing the first round of the men's singles on the same day. Daniil Medvedev, ranked No. 2 in the world, also agreed with the proposal to adjust match times.
Djokovic expressed dissatisfaction, stating the need for night matches. He said, "Lighting is prepared on all courts for night matches, and that could make life much easier for athletes," adding, "I don't understand why match times are not being adjusted." Due to the hot weather that day, Medvedev even used a portable air conditioner during the match.
According to CNN's weather forecast team, the temperature in Tokyo soared close to 35 degrees Celsius that day, with humidity exceeding 80%.
On the 23rd, during the women's ranking round in archery, Russian athlete Svetlana Gomboeva lost consciousness and collapsed due to the heat.
Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency forecasted that Typhoon Nepartak, the 8th typhoon of the season, is expected to make landfall in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the Tohoku region on the 27th. As strong winds and rain are anticipated, the organizing committee moved the rowing events scheduled for the 26th forward to the 24th and 25th.
