[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Our women's archery team made history by winning their ninth consecutive Olympic team gold medal.
The women's archery team, consisting of Kang Chae-young (Hyundai Mobis), Jang Min-hee (Incheon National University), and An San (Gwangju Women's University), defeated the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team composed of Kseniya Perova, Yelena Osipova, and Svetlana Gomboeva 6-0 (55-54, 56-53, 54-51) in the final of the women's team event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held on the 25th at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field in Tokyo, Japan.
With this victory, South Korea's women's archery team has dominated the team event since it was officially included in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, winning nine consecutive tournaments. They have never relinquished the throne in 33 years.
An San became the first athlete not only among Korean players but also among all participants in this tournament to win two gold medals. This marks the eighth time for a South Korean female archer to become a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the ninth time across both men's and women's teams. Previously, An San won the mixed team event alongside Kim Je-deok (Gyeongbuk High School) held the day before.
Kang Chae-young, who has been recognized as one of the world's top female archers for years but had not yet achieved Olympic success, finally secured the gold medal she had longed for. Jang Min-hee, who posted the best results in several internal evaluation matches before the tournament, also fulfilled her role and enjoyed the joy of winning her first Olympic medal.
The ROC, which competed under the Russian name and finished second at the 2016 Rio Olympics, once again failed to overcome the wall of Korean women's archery and had to settle for the silver medal for the second consecutive Olympics.
In the bronze medal match held earlier, Germany (Michelle Kroppen, Charlene Schwarz, Lisa Unruh) defeated Belarus (Karina Ziominskaya, Karina Kazlouskaya, Hanna Marusava) 5-1 (55-48, 53-51, 55-55) to claim the bronze medal.
