First in Constitutional History... National Intelligence Service Director's Illegal Surveillance Apology and Information Disclosure Resolution Passed in Plenary Session

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] For the first time in constitutional history, the "Special Resolution for the Disclosure of Illegal Surveillance Information by the National Intelligence Service, Fact-Finding, and Prevention of Recurrence," which was approved by the National Assembly Intelligence Committee, passed the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 24th.

It has been confirmed as a fact in the Supreme Court's information disclosure ruling last November that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) exceeded its official duties by collecting data on specific individuals.

This resolution urges stronger reform measures for the NIS and other national intelligence agencies. It is the first resolution at the National Assembly level calling for reflection on illegal intelligence activities by national intelligence agencies and prevention of recurrence.

The resolution includes a declaration from the head of the NIS to prevent recurrence of illegal surveillance, an apology to the victims, and active disclosure of surveillance information to information disclosure applicants and organizations within the scope that does not affect national security or infringe on the privacy of third parties.

It also urges strict compliance with the National Intelligence Service Act to ensure that there is no illegal political intervention in the NIS’s work related to the disclosure of illegal surveillance information and fact-finding.
