Democratic Party presidential candidate Jeong Se-gyun is holding a press conference in the briefing room of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council on the afternoon of the 20th.
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeong Se-gyun, the ruling party's presidential candidate, dismissed the possibility of unification with candidate Lee Nak-yeon.
On the 20th, Jeong held a press conference at the Gwangju Metropolitan Council briefing room and said, "There will be no unification with candidate Lee in this Democratic Party presidential primary."
He stated, "I registered as a preliminary candidate with the Election Commission, which means I intend to complete the race," and added, "There has been no discussion or consideration of unification so far."
He continued, "Not only are our backgrounds and personal characters different, but before becoming politicians, he was a journalist and I was an economist," and drew a clear line by saying, "Candidate Lee Kwang-jae had many points of contact such as his strong interest in the economy and future-oriented views, making unification possible, but with candidate Lee, aside from having served as Prime Minister, there is no common ground."
He also emphasized, "This presidential election will be a test of morality and economic capability," and said, "If the people carefully judge who should be the Democratic Party candidate with competitiveness in the general election and whether there are moral flaws or not, and choose a good candidate, the regime can definitely be reestablished."
Furthermore, he said, "Nowadays, even the slightest moral flaw is magnified and reproduced to cause political damage," and insisted, "If morality is lightly passed over as a compliment during the primary, it will act like a nuclear bomb in the general election. Proper verification must be done during the primary."
He added, "It is no exaggeration to say that the presidential candidate is decided in Gwangju," and said, "If the decision is made in Gwangju, the resistance to that candidate in other regions will decrease."
He expressed confidence, saying, "There are about two and a half months left in the primary, and no country in the world is swayed by public opinion polls," and "The primary landscape is shaking and will fluctuate several more times."
Regarding former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl's visit to the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery, he dismissed it by saying, "I have doubts about his sincerity and wonder if he came for the wrong reasons."
