Selected as the 'Walkable Street Forest Path' in Geumnam-ro, Dong-gu, Gwangju

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 16th that Geumnam-ro has been finally selected as the ‘Street Forest Path You Want to Walk’ promoted by Gwangju City to create resting spaces for citizens in the urban area.

For this street forest path selection, Gwangju City received recommendations for two street forest paths from each of the five autonomous districts, totaling 10 locations, and conducted the first review by the Urban Forest Creation and Management Deliberation Committee.

Through the first review, ▲Dong-gu Geumnam-ro ▲Seo-gu Naebang-ro ▲Nam-gu Obang-ro ▲Buk-gu Cheonjirin-ro ▲Gwangsan-gu Gonghang-ro were selected, and through the second evaluation via online citizen voting, the Geumnam-ro street tree path was finally confirmed.

The finally selected Geumnam-ro street forest path is a 1 km section extending from Jeonil Building to Geumnam-ro 5-ga Station, where 9,108 trees including ginkgo, baby camellia, liriope, and orchid, as well as 18,875 herbaceous plants, have been planted.

This place, located in a particularly barren urban area, serves not only to reduce fine dust and carbon but also as a resting place and shelter frequently visited by citizens in their daily lives. If designated as an excellent street forest path, additional incentives such as increased street tree maintenance costs will be supported next year.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “I am pleased that Geumnam-ro, symbolizing Gwangju, has been selected as the ‘Street Forest Path You Want to Walk.’ We will develop Gwangju’s Geumnam-ro, imbued with the history and spirit of Gwangju, into a path that citizens want to visit and walk more.”
