[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] SK Siltron is investing $300 million in Michigan, USA, to expand the supply of wafers for power management semiconductors used in electric vehicles.
On the 14th (local time), SK Siltron's subsidiary SK Siltron CSS announced an investment plan to expand its factory in Michigan and hire 150 employees to support electric vehicle production in the United States.
The silicon carbide wafers produced by SK Siltron are essential for manufacturing power management semiconductors used in electric vehicles. SK Siltron explained that power semiconductors using silicon carbide wafers can increase the driving range of electric vehicles by 5 to 10%. Additionally, they can be utilized in semiconductors for 5G communications.
Dong Jianwei, CEO of SK Siltron CSS, stated in a press release, "Demand is so high that we are considering additional investments."
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo also welcomed SK Siltron's investment in a statement. Secretary Raimondo said, "It is important to secure new supply chains within the United States for our companies and consumers to create an environment for sustainable growth."
