CJ Logistics Introduces Intelligent Scanners, Processing 6.1 Billion Boxes Over 5 Years

[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] CJ Logistics announced on the 14th that it has processed over 6.1 billion delivery packages in the past five years through the introduction of the intelligent scanner ITS.

ITS is a device that automatically scans delivery boxes rapidly passing on a conveyor belt, extracting and storing delivery product information contained in the waybill barcode. It was first introduced to the delivery field in November 2016, along with the industry's first automatic sorter called the 'Wheel Sorter.'

ITS recognizes the waybill barcode on the delivery box, while the Wheel Sorter automatically sorts delivery boxes by delivery area. There is no longer a need to visually distinguish rapidly moving boxes. A total of about 300 ITS devices are installed at delivery terminals nationwide.

In January 2019, it became possible to build big data based on the total volume and quantity of delivery products, enabling predictions of the total volume of goods that can fit in trunk trucks (large trucks) and the number of vehicles needed. This allowed operational processes at hubs and sub-terminals to be adjusted according to volume, improving efficiency.

CJ Logistics plans to conduct additional upgrades to ITS equipment by the end of this year. By enhancing the measurement camera function, it will be able to recognize irregularly shaped delivery products, such as those with basket-like shapes that were previously difficult to distinguish, and enable more accurate volume measurement and image storage.

Going forward, CJ Logistics plans to lead the advancement of delivery field automation based on the core capabilities of the TES Logistics Technology Research Institute and further widen the technological gap with competitors.

A CJ Logistics official said, "Thanks to advanced automated equipment such as ITS and the Wheel Sorter, we have been able to efficiently process more than 6.1 billion delivery products to date," adding, "We will strive to change the paradigm of the delivery industry through continuous introduction of advanced systems."
