Gwangyang City Council SanGeon Committee Confirms Heavy Rain Damage Sites

Visit to the site of house burial in Tanchi Village, Jinsang-myeon, and other locations

Gwangyang City Council SanGeon Committee Confirms Heavy Rain Damage Sites

[Gwangyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] The Industry and Construction Committee of the Gwangyang City Council in Jeollanam-do (Chairman Jeong Minki) recently visited Tanchi Village in Jinsang-myeon, where a landslide occurred due to heavy rain, and conducted on-site legislative activities, the committee announced on the 12th.

In the Gwangyang area, an average of 282mm of heavy rain fell on the 5th and 6th, causing damage to 43 facilities including roads and buildings, and 14.4 hectares of crops.

In particular, in Tanchi Village, Jinsang-myeon, a landslide buried five houses and warehouses, and one resident in their 80s died at the scene.

This landslide occurred when a stone retaining wall collapsed within the construction site for a new house behind the village, causing slope soil to cover houses and other structures.

The council members inquired about the administrative measures taken regarding residents' repeated complaints to the city, demanding safety accident prevention measures after stones and soil slid down to houses during construction since last year.

They also questioned whether there was any way to respond to the construction company's refusal to comply with the city's request to install drainage and review slope stability for residents' safety, citing legal regulations.

Chairman Jeong Minki said, "If residents' safety is at risk, safety measures must be implemented as a top priority regardless of legal regulations," adding, "The ground is currently weakened due to the heavy rain, and the monsoon season continues, so please thoroughly implement safety measures to prevent secondary damage."

He added, "We will review the results of the ongoing investigation by the Jeonnam Police Agency and discuss future countermeasures."
