[Wando＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] On the 11th, 12 additional confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) occurred in Wando, Jeollanam-do, causing shock.
According to Wando County on the 12th, the 12 confirmed cases are related to confirmed cases in the Gwangju area. Employee A of a seaweed processing company was confirmed positive for COVID-19 after having a meal with a confirmed case in Gwangju on the 5th. Subsequently, all family members and company employees of A were tested, resulting in 12 positive cases.
Among them, one is a family member of A, and the remaining 11 are foreign workers. By nationality, there are 6 from Vietnam, 2 from Kazakhstan, and 1 each from Russia, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia.
Wando County installed a temporary screening clinic near the seafood processing company and reportedly tested more than 500 people, so additional infections are expected to emerge.
Wando County will have only essential personnel work at the Geumil-eup office until the 13th and will temporarily close it. Operation of village senior centers and senior job programs will be temporarily suspended, and second PCR tests will be conducted for secondary close contacts in the villages.
A Wando County official said, “We are conducting a thorough epidemiological investigation keeping all possibilities open regarding the cause of infection,” and urged, “Please follow social distancing and quarantine guidelines.”
